Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy / 은하계를 여행하는 히치하이커를 위한 안내서

I've read "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" by Douglas Adams days ago. It's brutal experience to feel that "this book might be surely a funny one. But a thing called language barrier exists definitely. Most paragraphs, even sentences are beyond my comprehension. I could enjoy this book fully If and only if my english get better." Frankly speaking, Adams's english humor didn't appeal much to me. But it's certain that reading the author's brilliant imagination and clever application of science (mostly physics) was very pleasant.

"은하계를 여행하는 히치하이커를 위한 안내서"

애플 컴퓨터의 텍스트 어드벤쳐 게임으로 처음 접했었던 소설이다. 어떻게 진행해야 할 지 몰라서 매번 불도우저에게 깔려 죽었던 기억이 있는데, 지금 와서 또 해봐도 마찬가지이다. 주인공의 집에 도로를 낸다고 하며 강제 철거를 당하는 상황이 은하계를 가로지르는 길을 낸다고 지구를 없애버리는 상황으로 전개되고, 다행히 주인공은 지구에서 지구인인 척 지내고 있던 외계인 친구에게 의해 구출되어 은하계를 여행하게 된다는 것이 소설의 도입부이다.

굉장히 영어가 어렵다. 읽는 내내 영어를 공부해야겠다는 생각을 많이 했다. 어찌어찌하여 읽어냈지만 언어의 벽을 절감했다. 광속에 구애받지 않고 양자역학적 추진방법Improbability Drive을 이용하여 우주를 여행한다는 등 과학적 배경을 재미있게 녹여놓은 부분들에서는 잔 재미들을 느낄 수 있어서 좋았지만, 전편에 녹아있는 영국식의 유머러스한 전개는 굉장히 썰렁한 면도 있었다. 그래도 뭐랄까 진정한 이공계인들을 위한 소설이라고나 할까? 사실 이공계인들이 썰렁한 면도 많지 않은가. 나와 상성이 나쁘지 않은 그런 책이었다.

이 책은 히치하이커 시리즈의 첫 부분이고 뒤로 계속 이어지는 속편들이 있다. 정말 한가해질 때가 오면 합본판을 가지고 처음부터 느긋하게 읽어보면 어떨까 싶다.
