Abridged and simplified by Viola Huggins

I remember that I bought this short book in my middle school day. For I did't throw out any book, this one has been kept in my bookshelf for a long time. There are still some books waiting to be read. "OK. You're the next."

This one is an abridged version of Middlemarch, which is written by George Eliot, the pen name of Mary Anne Evans. Original one is very long story of over 900 pages. This one is 93 page and it's only for vocabulary building use. For this reason, it may not be appropriate to say that I've read Middlemarch. But I could see that there were many people in this novel and this was the story on their complex relationship. That is, it's a kind of epic story.

Usually an epic with well-knit plot delivers a great experience to readers. Though I cannot get any positive experience from reading this book, I think it's natural. The real taste of epic story can be provided only by reading full-text, not from abridged story. The following praises for this book might be a clue that this might be a really great story. Virginia Woolf described this book as "the magnificent book that, with all its imperfections, is one of the few English novels written for grown-up people." Martin Amis has described it as the greatest novel in the English language. I might be reading this one as full-text somedays.

영국의 여류작가 조지 엘리엇이 1870년대에 발표한 대하소설 미들마치Middlemarch의 축약판을 읽었다. 900페이지 분량의 방대한 분량을 90페이지 문고판, 그것도 영어 학습용으로 쉬운 단어만을 이용하도록 편집한 것이다. 왜 내가 25년여 전에 이 책을 샀을까는 아무리 생각해도 기억나지 않는다. 아마 작가 이름이 마음에 들었거나 아니면 겉표지가 마음에 들어서인것 같다. 

작품 자체는 한 시골 마을의 여러 사람들의 사랑과 결혼, 이혼과 죽음, 그리고 그로 인한 인간관계의 변화에 관한 이야기이다. 고전적인 이야기들이 주인공 소수 중심의 이야기인 반면에 이것은 여러 사람의 이야기를 잘 균형을 잡아서 풀어나갔기에  버지니아 울프 및 다른 소설가들이 훌륭하다고 호평을 한 것이다 라고 생각한다.

하지만, 대하소설을 축약해놓은 것이 재미나 메세지를 줄 리는 만무하다. 축약본의 가치는 문학이 아닌 실용서에 있지 문학의 경우는 완전히 다른 글이 되어버리니까. 번역본도 피해서 원문을 읽어야만이 작가의 의도를 온전히 파악할 수 있다라고 하지 않는가. 명작일 수도 있을 책을 이렇게 접하고 나니 과연 다시 이 책을 들 수 있을 지도 의문이 든다. 나중에 기회 있으면 한 번 보려고는 하겠지만, 아마도 "줄거리는 이미 축약본으로 읽었는데 굳이 또 볼 필요가 있을까?" 하면서 지나치기가 더 쉬워질 것이다.

책은, 좋은 책을 원본으로 읽는 것이 좋다.
