며칠 전 택배아저씨가 책상자를 전해주고 갔다. 책이 올 데가 없는데... 하면서 수발신인을 보았더니 동생이 보낸 것이다. 아하, 형 생일이라고 선물을 보냈구나. 고맙네. 하면서 뜯으니 그 안에서 나온 책 "여자를 증오한 남자들."

낯선 책 제목에 잠시 이게 무슨 책일까 생각했지만 책 표지를 크게 차지하고 있는 용 문신의 여자를 보고 곧 The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo구나 라고 알아차렸다. 아마존의 베스트셀러이기 때문에 이름만은 많이 들어봤었다. 여자를··· 은 원제인가보다 미국판 제목이 더 멋진걸··· 하며 어디 한 번 읽어볼까 하고 책장을 넘기기 시작했다.

사회 부적응자인, 그러나 천재적인 능력의 해커 리스베트 살란데르Lisbeth Salander와 시사고발지 밀레니엄의 편집장 미카엘 블롬크비스트Michael Nyqvist(대체 발음이 왜 이렇게 되는지...)가 어떤 사건을 맞아 해결해 나아가는 스토리이다. 주인공과 동일하게 시사고발지 편집장을 오래 역임한 저자 스티그 라르손Stieg Larsson이 40대 후반 노후 보장을 목표로 쓴 것인 만큼 스토리가 탄탄하며 진행이 흥미진진하다. 오랜 만에 이런 류의 소설을 읽어서 그런지 무척 재미있게 읽었다, 소재 자체는 엽기에 가깝지만...

그러나 이런 류의 스릴러/추리 소설이라 하면 역시 시드니 셸던Sidney Sheldon이 최고다. 시드니 셸던보다 스티그 라르손이 더 디테일하고 사건 얼개가 꽉 맞아 들어차고 있을지는 모르지만 (라고 쓰고 있지만 그런 것 같다.) 이야기꾼이라는 입장에서 시드니 셸던을 당해 낼 수는 없다고 생각한다. 심심할 때 마다 아버지의 서가에 있는 책을 하나하나 빼서 읽던 어린 시절의 어느 날 (이런 점에서 아버지의 서가는 자녀 교육에 큰 영향을 끼친다.) 나는 천사의 분노Rage of Angels라는 두꺼운 책을 읽게 되었고 그 즉시 시드니 셸던이 풀어내는 이야기에 매료되었던 것이다. 그 책을 필두로 어둠의 저편The Other Side of Midnight부터 시간의 모래밭The Sands of Time까지 모두.

여자를 증오한 남자들은 10부작으로 기획된 소설로써, 불을 가지고 노는 소녀라는 연작이 있다. 하지만 그 보다는 시간의 모래밭 이후의, 90년대의 시드니 셸던의 소설을 읽고 싶어졌다.

I've been big fan of Sidney Sheldon since Rage of Angels. The story of a beautiful and professional heroine and surrounding crime and mystery always fascinated me. Hard work of high-school kept me away from that kind of novel and I've been away from Sidney Sheldon till now. Stephen King and Michael Crichton have failed to get my interest. 

Stieg Larsson's "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" reminds me about Sidney Sheldon. Lisbeth Salander, a charming figure from the non-traditional view, is a professional hacker and this means that she is a God in this era. She is introduced, joined other main figure, put into a mystery, and solves it while being in romance with the other hero in this book. This is a solid story which has roots on the author's own experience and well-plotted. This is a interesting book, definetly. However, rape, murder, and inhumane crime are main materials and those made me somewhat uncomfortable during reading. Other people might enjoy these tough subjects, but I'm not. That might be why I reminded Sidney Sheldon, who wrote fairy-tales of adult version, after reading this.

R.I.P. Sidney Sheldon. I've much enjoyed your works.
