The year 2009 is flowing like a river. Autumn is at the next corner. I regret for not having done anything. So I pick up a book by me and read it, thinking reading a book might bring me a positive effects.

No Time to Die Liz Tilberis

This is HM's book. I regarded this as a book on fashion since Korean translated title is 'Fashion Genii Liz Tilberis Met'. Had I not regret for passing year, I'd not pick up this book. (A fashion world is across universe to me.) This book is not on fashion but on a human suffering from a cancer. The book is boring. If Liz is not a poor writer, Korean translation might do a poor job.

영국 보그, 미국 하퍼스바자 편집장을 맡았던 엘리자베스 틸버리스라는 사람의 자서전이다. 암투병을 했고, 패션세계에서는 유명한 사람이었던 듯 하다. 영문제목을 번역하자면 아직 죽을수는 없어 정도가 되는데 책 제목을 패션천재들로 한 것은 투병기는 많다고 편집자가 생각했기 때문일게다. 고인의 인생이야 한 권의 책으로 가늠할 수는 없겠으나 책 자체는 여고생이 쓴 일기라고 보여질 정도로 지루하다. 나 이런 연예인 알아.. 라고 빼꼭히 쓰여진 일기랄까. 번역 문제라고 보기에는 구성 자체도 좋지 않았다.

무엇보다 죽음까지 상품화하는 서구 문명을 보는 것 같아 더 씁쓸한 느낌. 모리와 함께한 화요일을 읽을 때는 그렇지 않았었는데. 아무래도 활자라는 것에는 쓴 사람의 인생의 깊이가 드러나는듯하다.

The Passionate Programmer: Creating a Remarkable Career in Software Development Chad Fowler

This book is on "how to live" by IT (Information Technology) guys who has music background. Chad says that a life of programmer is very similar to that of musicians. I totally agree. At the exact reason, this book is not worth of getting 5 star. The approach comparing two distinct kinds of job and finding a similarity seems to be fresh, but the freshness does not mean it's good reasoning. I find myself prefer general argument rather than this kind of specific argument on the theme 'how to live' while reading this book.

However this is worth reading. If you are a programmer and have not read a book on the subject of "how to live," then buy it and read it. This book might be a good companion book to "Pragmatic Programmers", IMHO.

회사 동료가 'Pragmatic Thinking and Learning'을 보고 있길래 그것을 사려고 Amazon에 갔다가 이리저리 흘러가서 결국 사게된 책. 모두 맞는 얘기다. 그러나 올해 자기계발에 대한 책을 너무도 많이 읽었기에 지금시점에서는 단지 '맞는 얘기야'라는 정도. 그러나 맞는 얘기기에 책모서리는 많이 접혀있다.

Like the Flowing River: Thoughts and Reflections Paulo Coelho

현재의 화장실의 동반자 (웃음). 몇달전에 읽었는데 블로그에는 미처 올리지 못하였었다. 아나운서 황정민이 조선일보에 작정하고 비난하는 서평을 올렸기에 궁금해져서 사 보았다. 어쩌면 고도의 마켓팅작전에 당한 것일지도 모르지만 현대의 미디어가 그렇게까지 영악하리라고는 보지 않는다. 여하튼, 연금술사 외 여러 단편을 보았지만 그렇게까지 매력적으로 보이지 않았던 코헬료가 이 산문에서는 퍽 신선한 느낌을 주었다. 동양적인 동양문화와 서양적인 서양문화는 너무 전형적인 반면 동양적인 서양문화나 서양적인 동양문화는 신선하게 다가오는데 코헬료가 딱 그렇다. (여기서 동양적이란 영적을 의미하며 서양적이란 합리주의를 의미한다.) 구도하는 자세, 인터넷에 연결된 은둔의 삶, 활쏘기를 통한 자신의 수도. 마음이 곧 세상이라는 것, 바라면 이루어진다는 것.

코헬료, 마음에 들었다. 하루키와 함께 나와 같이 가자.

그리고 황정민씨, 바라면 이루어진다고 믿어 봐요. 이루어지는게 중요한게 아니라 믿는게 중요한거라고요.

This book is also an essay on 'how to live'. "The Passionate Programmer" is by a programmer, however, while this is by a writer. More fundamental difference is that the former story is based on the Western culture but the Eastern culture is flowing in the latter story. I liked this book, more than Coelho's famous stories (Illusionists,...). I like the culture fusion if well fused. I recommend this book to everyone.
