Flood of Information

The Web is information warehouse. Web searching makes it feasible and valuable. Anyone can post information on the Web easily and browse information from the Web easily. The emergence of social media makes it more easy. Blogs and Twitters store numerous paragraphs and sentences on the Web. All stored information becomes the target of the Web search engines. No matter how intelligent Web search engines are, the amount of information searched is increasing consistently. If this trends keep going, the value of the Web might go lower. So to speak, Unsearchable (or hard to search) information is not worth of a penny.

I predict two things: (1) The activity of editing should become more and more important. Imagine the role of magazine editor. The editor chooses topic, orders articles, admit only valuable articles from gathered articles, and re-works on the selected article. Because of the importance of this activity, current Web search engines tries to act this role on themselves. This applies to the human side. The edit of information might be valued more, not less, to the creation of information. Artists (including writers, craftsmen) might be upset at this. It is, however, a disruptive era. They'll acknowledge it at some time. (2) The fundamentals will be more valuable. The fundamentals means deep understanding. When the amount of information is manageable, it can be possible to know all topics though not in deep and it is also valuable. It's the time the word 'know- where' got spotlights. As information is flooding, it becomes harder and harder to know all topics in slightest sense. Then 'Know-how' will strike back.

Why I am writing on this topic? I recently read the following book on iphone game development and very disappointed. I got a good impression on Apress publisher until now: 'They publish only really good books.' I'll omit the word 'only' from now on.

iPhone Game Projects책을 스키밍했다. 하아... appstore가 히트를 치고 있으니까 이런 쓰레기 같은 책이 나오는구나. 정독으로 시작했으나 산만하고 깊이 없는 내용에 의해 점점 책장을 빨리 넘기다가, 결국 휴지통으로 들어간 그런 책. apress, 실망이야.

Social Media

Following video clip shows interesting numbers on social media. Why social media like twitter, facebook buzz like a thunderstorm? Because they help people connect each other, escape from the loneliness brought by computer revolution. In other words, people is social beings.

It was a computer era, when HF was born and grown up. HF, Apple Inc., and Microsoft were born/founded at 70s. IBM PC, Sun microsystems and CISCO systems are appeared in HF's teenage. HF was easily hooked up by the mood and now make his living by programming.

Then what will be the future of HO? MySpace, Facebook, HO, and Twitter were all born in 2000s. One certain thing is that HO will live in unprecedented social evolution.

그건 그렇고... HO는 93cm, 11.6kg. 너무 마른것 아니니 HO. 많이 먹자꾸나.

HO watched a first movie

Last saturday we took HO to her first movie: Ice Age 3. HO did not fear nor get bored. She watched the movie more than 40 minutes, and then fell asleep. It was very cold inside the movie theatre, and she got a cold. Sorry HO, but you've watched your first movie in your life!

어린이집에 일주일 다닌 HO를 위해, 주말에 영화를 보러 갔다. HO도 예상보다 잘 보아줬지만 아빠가 된 이후 영화관에 간 적이 없었던 HF도 간만에 좋은 구경을 했다. 슈렉시절에 비해 애니메이션이 얼마나 정밀해 졌는지... 감탄.

Typing speed regained.

As I wrote here, I switched Hangul keyboard layout to 3-beol-sik 6 months ago. Today, I get back my typing speed (350 keystroke per minute) at last.

날개셋 타자연습으로 3벌식 타자연습을 한지 어언 6개월. 드디어 3벌식 시작하기전에 2벌식으로 세워두었던 타자게임 기록을 갱신했다.

A TED talk rocks! HF decided to watch TED talks regularly.

There is a time in which all things become boring and I do not want to do anything, even raising a finger. In those time I usually surf the Web or read a book.

Today I remembered TED site and decided to try watching TED talks in those boring time. I randomly selected a talk and watched it and enjoyed it. I'd view the talks regularly.

The talk is by Elizabeth Gilbert, who is a writer, a magazine editor, and a woman the movie “Coyote Ugly” is based on. Her talk was very humorous and fascinating. When she told that the flock of poem haunts a poet and the poet had to run and run and run, I cannot help but burst into laughter. 5 stars.

지루할 때 TED 토크를 보아볼까?하고 하나 무심코 본 것에 반해버렸다. 코요테 어글리의 실제 주인공으로 알려진 Elizabeth Gilbert가 창의력/영감 에 대해 20분간 이야기하는 것이었는데 내용자체도 좋지만, 그것을 유머를 섞어가며 청중들을 이야기속으로 불러가는 모습에 찬탄이 절로 나왔다. Elizabeth 뿐만이 아니라 많은 서양사람들은 대화의 그리고 연설 능력을 가지고 있는 듯하다. 타고나기도 해야하고 많은 연습도 필요하다. 특히 우리나라에서는 더욱.

HO야, 저 연사처럼 이야기 할 수 있게 컸으면 한다.

렉싱턴의 유령 (レキシントンの幽靈),무라카미 하루키, 김난주 역

하루키의 단편선. 앞의 세 단편인 “렉싱턴의 유령”, “녹색 짐승”, “침묵”은 하루키의 은근한 메세지를 알것 같았으나 다른 4개의 소설은 아직 잘 모르겠다. 몇년 후 다시 읽어 보면 좀 다르려나? 소설가, 혹은 예술가라는 인간들은 과연 보통의 사람들 보다 다른 세계를 보고, 다른 세계에 살고 있는 것일까?

다른 사람들이 하루키를 왜 좋아하는지는 모르겠으나... 나는 하루키의 소설에서 나 자신을 느낄수 있는것 같기 때문에... 좋아한다. 거울과 같은 느낌의 소설들. 저자의 메세지는 보조일 뿐, 주된 느낌은 읽는 사람에, 읽는 시점에 따라 거울에 비추어지는 느낌. 책 뒷편에 하루키는 “렉싱턴의 유령”에서 '깊이 공유하는 것'을 쓰고 싶다고 했고, 역자 김난주는 '외로움과 두려움'을 발견했다고 하는데 나는 일인칭 주인공의 '후회'를 느꼇으니 말이다.

Ghosts in Lexington/Haruki Murakami

I cannot find this novel in Amazon.com. Only major novels of him seems to be introduced to Western culture. His short novel is humorous and delivers his profound message in very light way. Jazzy way in other words? He improvises words in order to form a story. The story is like a mirror. Though Haruki puts his messages in the story, reader founds himself reading his own story on top of Haruki's message. That's why I like him.

2010 대한민국 트렌드, LG경제연구원, 형선호

2005년에 발간. 2010년을 일년 앞둔 지금 다시 읽어 보았다. LG경제연구원도 물론 Thinktank들이 모여있겠으나, 웬지 한 사람이 쓰는 미래학 책에 비하여, 학생들 방학숙제를 모아놓은 느낌이라고나 할까? 겹치는 내용도 많고, 그냥 어디서 줏어다 베껴놓은 내용도 많다. 광범위하게 서술하다 보니 스크랩할만한 내용도 있긴 하지만, 다시 보기에는 책 전체적 품질이 떨어진다.

다음 세군데를 접어 놓았다.

• 가치 소비: 최고를 싼가격에. 감성과 가격을 모두 만족해야한다. 그러나 감성(품질)을 먼저 선택후 그후 가격으로 간다.
• 작은 사치: '신분재'에 대한 사치. 휴대폰, 차 등.
• 톱클래스 소비시장 중국: 1%가 VVIP인 중국. 중국의 VVIP는 천만명이 넘는다.

I regularly read book on future from early childhood. I enjoyed similar story in newspaper section when I was 7-10 years old; "All cars will fly in year 20xx..." or so.

However, as I grow up, I found the story being simply wrong or written without deliberate thought. This book is another messy book. Some articles are interesting but major part of it are just messy.

Skinny Bitch Rory Freedman Kim Barnouin

자극적인 제목의 다이어트책. 나 자신은 매우 공감하고 훌륭하다 생각하지만, 합리적인 성격의 구미권 독자들은 예상대로 혹평한다. 왜냐하면 논거가 확실하지 않은 논설문이기 때문에. 그렇지만, 책 자체로는 Complete하지 않아도 그동안 들어왔던 사실들과 어느정도 들어 맞기 때문에 나는 만족스러웠다. “당신은 당신이 먹는 것이다” 라는 이야기. 나이가 들어가면서 그 이야기에 100%를 넘어서 동감을 하게 되고 있다. 좋은 것을 먹자.

I enjoyed this book. Though this book is not 'complete' in terms of proofs, I like its 'sound' message. By 'sound', I mean I believe the author's message completely: You are what you eat.

HO went to nursery school.

It's HO's first day to nursery school. I'm filled with lots of worry. If I had some success, I wouldn't let HO go nursery so early age like this. I'm really sorry, HO.

HO의 어린이집 첫날이다. 아침부터 부산하게 깨운 후 든든하게 밥을 먹이고 온 가족이 같이 집을 나섰다.

아침 회의를 끝내고 아내에게 전화를 했다.

"어떻게 많이 울지는 않았어?"

"많이 울었지...내가... HO는 울지 않았어"

아내가 바라보며 발을 돌리는 그 순간에도 어린이집의 그네에서 조용히 앉아 있을 뿐이라고. 엄마와 한참을 떨어져 있음을 받아 들이는 것 같다고.

이르다. 유치원 갈 다섯, 여섯살 까지는 가족과 떨어질 필요가 없을텐데. 이것이 현대인의 보통 삶이라고 하나.. 가슴이 메어오는 것은 어쩔수가 없다.

아빠가 못나서 그래.. 미안.
